What is DVB?
The Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB) is an industry-led consortium of over 300 broadcasters,
manufacturers, network operators, software developers & regulatory bodies in over 35 countries and is
committed to designing and improving global standards for the delivery of digital television and data services.
DVB was designed to facilitate digital broadcast of audio and video, using MPEG and other advanced
technologies. Today, DVB is extensively used to support the transmission of data services and DVB
technology has been successfully adapted to satellite, terrestrial and mobile communications. It has become
an integral part of global broadcasting, setting the global standard for satellite, cable and terrestrial
transmissions and equipment.
Using DVB platforms for IP service allows SkyVision to deliver multiple IP streams over a single satellite
carrier, thus providing our customers with an intelligent and very powerful, cost-effective solution for dynamic
bandwidth distribution between different POP's and sub-customers.
Asymmetric Internet Over Satellite:
Simple Asymmetrical Service - satellite delivery offers the advantage of allowing distinct configuration of
the Transmit and the Receive sides of the service in accordance with specific traffic and routing requirements.
Internet traffic is typically asymmetric and for economic reasons, satellite networks frequently combine a
large forward channel with a narrower return path.
Symmetrical Service with Asymmetric Refinement - this type of Service is designed for traffic with the same
bandwidth in both directions, but with the added advantage of a combined "burstable" Receive-side for
added bandwidth, whenever needed.
